What Is the OWCP 4-Hour Rule?

• Most supervisors want advance notice of your appointment, except in emergencies.
• The time off is logged as administrative leave, not sick leave.
• If your visit ends in under 4 hours, you should head back to work if you can.
• Anything over 4 hours needs a doctor's note.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. Taking the whole day off. OWCP will not pay past the 4 hours unless your doctor says so.
2. Skipping the doctor's note. Without it, OWCP can deny the time off.
3. Burning COP days for short visits. Each Continuation of Pay day counts as a full day, even if you only used 2 hours.
4. Letting your supervisor charge sick leave. That is a common error. Speak up and bring your paperwork.
